iPhone 16 Pro Max Stuck on Apple Logo After Water — Fix

An iPhone 16 Pro Max fell in a pool and, in the owner's words, "never worked again." If your phone went in the water and now won't boot right — stuck on the Apple logo, restarting on its own, or dropping into a recovery-mode screen — this is the exact failure, start to finish, and what it means for your photos.

It went in the pool, or the sink, or the lake. You dried it off, and now it won't behave. Maybe it shows the Apple logo over and over and never finishes. Maybe it turns itself on when you didn't touch it. Maybe plugging in a cable throws it to a screen telling you to connect it to a computer. From where you're sitting, the phone is broken and everything on it feels stuck inside.


Here's the part that matters before you do anything else: water damage very rarely erases your data. Your photos, messages, and notes live on the storage (NAND) chip, and that chip is almost never what water kills. What water attacks is the power and signal circuitry around it — the parts that let the phone boot. A phone stuck looping on the Apple logo isn't a phone that lost its data; it's a phone that can't get through startup. Fix the board fault underneath, and the phone boots long enough to pull everything off.


Before you do anything, though, know that the most dangerous mistakes here aren't hardware ones — they're things people do to the phone thinking they're helping, and any one of them can turn recoverable data into gone-for-good:


  • Don't update it. An update adds fresh security and encryption checks that lean on chips the water may have already damaged — and can lock the data behind them.

  • Don't restore it. A restore erases the device completely. That's not a reset; it's the end of any recovery.

  • Don't put it in Lost Mode. With Stolen Device Protection, Lost Mode can bury access behind Face ID — which frequently never works again after water damage — and lock the data away for good.

  • Don't let a shop guess. A water-damaged iPhone needs real board-level diagnosis. Guesswork, or jumping straight to CPU work before the actual fault is identified, can damage the CPU itself and permanently destroy the best chance of recovery.


And the simple hardware one: leave it powered off and don't keep charging it — every push of power through a wet, corroded board gives a new short room to spread. (The rice trick does nothing for corrosion already forming inside.)


The symptoms this failure produces

Water damage doesn't produce one clean symptom — it produces a family of them, and you might recognize yours:


  • Stuck on the Apple logo, or looping through it over and over without finishing.

  • Turns on by itself — boots, or tries to, even when you didn't press anything.

  • Drops into recovery mode (the "connect to computer" screen) when you plug in a charger or cable.

  • Dead or unresponsive at first, then flickers to life with the logo.

  • Was fine for a bit after getting wet, then got worse — corrosion is progressive.


All of these can trace back to a single, very specific thing water does to the board.


What's actually happening inside the iPhone 16 Pro Max


On this phone, the pool water left corrosion that bridged two lines that should never touch: the power button line and a neighboring antenna line. While the board was wet, that bridge behaved like the power button being pressed and held — constantly.


Inside the phone, "power button held down" isn't a guess; it's a specific voltage condition. The power button line is supposed to sit at 1.8 volts, and when you press the button, it briefly drops to zero — that drop to zero is what the CPU reads as a press. The corrosion pulled that line down and held it there. Worse, the constant drain slowly damaged the PMIC — the chip that manages the phone's power — until it could no longer put the proper 1.8 volts back on that line at all. So even after the phone dried out, the line stayed low, the CPU kept reading a "held" power button, and the phone kept trying to boot on its own. That's the Apple logo loop. And because holding the power button while plugging in a charger is the normal way to force recovery mode, plugging in a cable during the loop kicked it straight to the recovery screen.


None of that touches your data. It's a power-delivery fault, not a storage fault.

The repair, step by step


Reading the symptom. With good parts attached, the phone did exactly what the theory predicted — it tried to boot on its own and looped the Apple logo, then jumped to recovery mode when a charger went in. Measuring the power button line showed 0.4 volts where there should have been 1.8. That low voltage was the whole problem: the CPU was reading it as a held button.


Finding the root cause. The line itself tested healthy — not shorted, not disconnected from the PMIC — which ruled out the simple explanations and pointed at the PMIC itself. The corrosion bridge to the antenna line had been draining that circuit while wet, and that constant pull had left the PMIC unable to hold the correct voltage.


Trying the least-invasive fix first. Before opening up the board, I tried to supplement the missing 1.8 volts with a jumper wire from another 1.8-volt line — the kind of fix that, when it works, avoids far more invasive surgery. On a similar older repair it had worked. This time it didn't hold, so rather than force it, I moved to the proper fix.


The real fix — splitting the board and replacing the PMIC. Recovering this meant splitting the board's stacked layers to reach and replace the PMIC. The 16-series PMIC is held down with very tough underfill, which made this the slow, careful part of the job.


A surprise along the way. Severe board work like this occasionally turns up a second problem, and this one did: during the heavy removal, a small chip that generates the phone's main system voltage cracked, throwing a short on the main power line. I found it on the thermal camera — heat where there shouldn't be any — confirmed the crack under the scope, and replaced the chip from a donor board.


Result. After the replacement: no more voltage leak, no more booting on its own, and a clean, normal startup — Apple logo, then a full boot. The phone was stable, and the data was recovered.


What this meant for the customer's data


This was a data-recovery job, and it succeeded — the owner gets his data back. Worth noting how the board is handled: the phone's RF board, the part that only provides cellular service, isn't needed to reach your data, so on a water job it's simply swapped with a donor. The board that actually holds everything you care about — the CPU and storage — is the one that gets stabilized and recovered.
